HowToDoItFrugally Author Helps Writers Extend Life of Great Book ReviewsLos Angeles, CA -- Sometimes a review so good comes along that authors are loathe to let it die. They might include it in their media kit or add it to their websites. Now its life can be extended even further with Carolyn Howard-Johnson's blog, The New Book Review. Here is a review blog that doesn't judge a book by its cover or by the press used to print it. If one reviewer loved a book, that qualifies it for more coverage. Authors are asked to follow the guidelines given in the left column of the blog and, in return, are asked only to let their fans and the media know it is there. That helps expose every review on the blog (a cross-promotion of sorts) and gives authors an opportunity to reach out to the public. Howard-Johnson is the founder of Authors' Coalition (http://authorscoaltionandredeneginepress.com), and this blog (www.TheNewBookReview.blogspot.com) is an extension of how this group reaches out to help authors including a free e-book section on the site and more. Directors are Pat McGrath Avery and Joyce Faulkner (www.redenginepress.com). Howard-Johnson is an instructor for UCLA Extension's Writers' Program and the award-winning author of literary fiction and poetry. She is also the author of USA Book News' Best Professional Book and Irwin Award winner, The Frugal Book Promoter: How to Do What Your Publisher Won't, and the soon-to-be-released The Frugal Editor: Put Your Best Book Forward to Avoid Humiliation and Ensure Success. Curious readers and writers will find reviews of works by authors like Yvonne Perry, Erica Stux, Joyce Anthony and Cheryl Kaye Tardiff who wrote the famous Whale Song. It includes reviews by well-known reviewers like Mayra Calvani and historians like Marshall Trimble. More information on the blogger is available at http://www.carolynhoward-johnson.com and www.howtodoitfrugally.com. She also blogs at www.sharingwithwriters.blogspot.com and writes the Back to Literature column for www.MyShelf.com.

New Journal Works for Authors Inspiration and Hope on Each Page
Los Angeles, CA -- Carolyn Howard-Johnson, a UCLA Writers' Program Instructor and "Back to Literature" columnist for MyShelf.com, has co-edited a journal with both a writing and a promotional twist. Published by Red Engine Press (redenginepress.com) "The Complete Writer's Journal" encourages new writers with quotes from emerging authors as well as experienced ones and has given many new authors a chance to have their most memorable quotes in print. I The Complete Writer's Journal is also an example of a useful cross-promotion effort. Each author quoted (100 of them!) will promote the journal itself (and by extension, the first "Complete Writer" in the series, also published by REP). Those included were juried by Howard-Johnson and fellow editors Pat Avery and Joyce Faulkner. Kristie Leigh Maguire, one of the quoted authors says, "Yesterday I received my copies of the Journal that I ordered. They are BEAUTIFULLY done!" Each contributing author will use the journals differently, but Howard-Johnson, the award-winning author of "This is the Place," plans to use them as thank you gifts to editors and producers (they won't get tossed like many doo-dad type souvenir gifts); she plans to personalize these gifts with permanent thank yous as entries on the first pages of the spiral bound book. Some of the participating authors are using them as add-on sales to their own books at bookfairs. Many are giving them to friends for the holidays. Of course, anyone can use them as gifts for people who journal or write or draw or travel. They are attractive and, on occasion, funny or inspirational. Order them from Howard-Johnson by sending an e-mail to HoJoNews.aolcom or at: http://redenginepress.com/buy_tcw_journal.htm As a service to authors, they are also available in bulk at special prices. Howard-Johnson is the author of USA Book News' Best Professional Book, THE FRUGAL BOOK PROMOTER, and her campaign for it captured the Irwin Award from the Book Publicists of Southern California. She was recently awarded Woman of the Year in Arts and Entertainment by members of the California Legislature; her home town's Character and Ethics Commission honored for her work on promoting tolerance and the Pasadena Weekly named her to their list of "San Gabriel Valley women who make life happen" for literary activism. She is the author of three other books, all award-winners and the founder of Authors' Coalition (http://authorscoalitionandredenginepress.com).

Authors' Coalition Offers Value-Added ConceptsMaking Bookfairs Work for Authors
Los Angeles, CA--Sometimes big ideas start small and grow up. A loosely knit group of cooperating authors came together in 2003 at a bookfair; they found their cross-promotional effort worked better than previous endeavors but still left much to be desired. Since then one of those authors, Carolyn Howard-Johnson, put this learning experience and hundreds more promoting her own books into a nitty-gritty how-to book for authors called The Frugal Book Promoter: How to Do What Your Publisher Won't. When she found her readers wanted more direction, she published an e-zine that keeps them up-to-date on new promotion ideas and book news. That grew into Authors' Coalition where writers and publishers come together to learn in an ever-changing and puzzling industry. Now a formal entity with a website of its own, Authors' Coalition (http://authorscoaltionandredeneginepress.com), plans to introduce themselves -- formally -- to writers in Southern California at the LA Times Festival of Books in April of 2006, Booth #610. The group's booth -- itself a model for authors -- will include more than 30 authors. Unlike most booth concepts, this one showcases authors using value-added efforts to make it a success. These include a catalog of the featured books for booksellers, and a promotional CD that will be given to booth visitors and the media. The booth also limits the number of featured authors so that each can be highlighted. Authors' Coalition also serves as a web-presence for its members with ad space and reviews for participating authors. The organizations educate with a blog (http://redenginepress.com/chjohnson), offers short-run support materials that can be tailored to a specific event, free writing-related e-books and more. Authors' Coalition founder, Howard-Johnson, is an award-winning literary author and poet and her how-to book won USA Book News' "Best Professional Book 2004" and the Book Publicists of Southern California's Irwin Award (http://www.bookpublicists.org/pages/IRWIN_winners.asp ). She also co-produces a series of audios for writers published by Double Dragon Press (http://www.double-dragon-ebooks.com/imprintlist.asp?imprint=PODRADIO). Principals in the organization include Joyce Faulkner and Pat Avery, editors and publishers of Red Engine Press, and Carolyn Howard-Johnson, author, publicist and instructor for UCLA Extension's Writers' Program. The growing support team also includes Kristie Leigh Maguire, publisher of JadaStar Publish. More information on the participants can be found at: http://www.tlt.com/authors/carolynhowardjohnson.htm .
